There used to be a certain kind of Mac app experience that felt obvious, fast, and quietly powerful.

You had a video. You wanted a GIF. You dragged it in, trimmed it, adjusted the output, and got something small enough to share — without fighting a timeline editor, a cloud service, or a maze of export settings.

GIF Distillery is my attempt to bring that feeling back — rebuilt for the modern Apple platforms.

Why GIF Distillery exists

GIFs are still useful.

Not because they are technically efficient. They are not. In many ways, GIF is an old and inefficient format.

But that is exactly why a good GIF tool still matters.

People still need lightweight visual snippets for bug reports, UI reviews, release notes, documentation, internal chats, design feedback, and product discussions. A short looping animation often explains an interaction faster than a paragraph or a full video.

The problem is that creating a good GIF is still too much work.

GIF Distillery is built around one simple idea:

Turn video into a useful, shareable GIF with as little friction as possible.

Built for the Mac

GIF Distillery is designed first as a native Mac app.

That means it supports the small details that make a Mac app feel like a Mac app.

You can import a video directly from Finder by dropping it onto the app icon. No import dialog required. No project setup required. Just drop a movie file onto GIF Distillery and start working.

It also supports a Mac-like multi-window workflow. Open one video, work on it, then open another in a separate window. You can compare clips, prepare multiple exports, or keep different ideas open without forcing everything into a single workspace.

This is not a web app wrapped in a desktop shell. It is built as a modern Apple-platform app using SwiftUI, with the goal of keeping the experience clean, responsive, and familiar.

GIF Distillery is inspired by a kind of focused utility software that used to be more common on the Mac: small apps that did one job well, respected the platform, and stayed out of your way.

The difference is that GIF Distillery is being built with today’s expectations in mind.

That means a modern SwiftUI interface, native windowing, smoother Apple-platform integration, and a foundation that can grow beyond manual parameter tweaking.

Over time, the goal is to make the app smarter about output decisions: reducing file size, choosing sensible frame rates, scaling dimensions, and helping users get a good result without becoming GIF compression experts.

GIF Distillery is a universal app. With a one-time purchase, it’s available on all platforms (iPhone, iPad, and Mac).

The ideal version of GIF Distillery should feel simple at first, but powerful when needed.
